NAAMA MI 2013 Scholarship Program

NAAMA MI is pleased to announce its

2013 Scholarship Program

 Introduction

  1. The Michigan Chapter of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA-MI) has established a scholarship fund to support the scholarly activities of graduate students in the health field.
  2. The Objective of the scholarship award is to assist future generation of Arab American healthcare students in lessening their financial strains during the educational years. As a result, NAAMA MI hopes this investment in the future generation of Arab American healthcare professionals translates into giving back to the community at large.
  3. The scholarship amount has been set at $2500 per recipient.
  4. A Scholarship Committee has been established to oversee this program.
  5. Scholarship awards must be used for tuition or other education related expenses necessary to advance the careers of awardees in the health field
  6. Awardees are expected to become actively involved in NAAMA-MI and to provide educational, charitable, and humanitarian services to the community NAAMA-MI supports.

  Process:

  • Eligibility Criteria
  1. Students must be members of NAAMA-MI or meet the eligibility criteria to become student members in NAAMA-MI.
  2. Students must be enrolled in a graduate program in a health related field in any University in Michigan.
  3. Board members and their immediate family are non eligible for the scholarship award.
  • Application Packet

The application packet must include the following:

  1. A completed NAAMA-MI Scholarship Form
  2. Personal statement by the applicant including at least the following information:
    • Description of any community service that the applicant had performed.
    • Description of future activities the applicant will perform to support the community.
    • Description of how the award will help the applicant further his/her career.
    • Cumulative GPA at application submission.
  3. Updated and signed Curriculum Vitae. The curriculum vitae must have been prepared within three months of the date of submission of the application.
  4. Evidence that the applicant is enrolled as a graduate student in an eligible university and is in good standing.
  5. It is the responsibility of the applicant to compile all of these documents and submit them as a packet to the scholarship committee. The scholarship committee will not seek any missing information.
  • Submission
  1. All application packets must be submitted electronically.
  2. It is the responsibility of the applicant to scan all the required documents and submit them as a single PDF file to the Scholarship Committee.
  3. Applications must be submitted by email to naamamichigan@gmail.com
  • Timeline
  1. Applications are due to the NAAMA-MI Scholarship Committee by 4:00 pm of September 15 of every calendar year.
  2. The Scholarship Committee will review the application packets before the October meeting of the NAAMA-MI Board of Directors.
  3. Awardees will be selected during the October meeting of the NAAMA-MI Board of Directors.
  4. Awardees will be notified prior to and announced during the annual Business Meeting and Gala Dinner of NAAMA-MI.
  •  Disbursement of funds
  1. Funds will be disbursed directly to the recipient of the award.
  2. It is expected that awardees will attend the Gala Dinner to receive the award.

NAAMA MI Vs ASACA Basketball Game 2013

NAAMA MI held it’s annual collegial competition against ASACA at the Beverly Hills Academy in Franklin,Michigan. It was a fun time with crowds cheering for their team. Ultimately NAAMA MI did pull it off with a win with the final score of 84 to 63. Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to next year’s competition.

As a part of NAAMA MI continuous effort to hold various activities for members,  a bowling night  was held at  Langan’s Nor-West Bowling Lanes on Saturday, May 18. Members attended with their families and had night full of bowling , pizza and fun.

Oakland University – William Beaumont School of Medicine Tour

NAAMA News

NAAMA MI President Dr. Fawaz along  with board members and members at large held a private meeting with the founding Dean of Oakland university- William Beaumont School of medicine Dr. Robert Folberg on the campus of Oakland  University in Rochester. The meeting aimed at building bridges between OU-WBSOM and NAAMA MI. The meeting covered many topics of discussion including the innovative and novel curriculum being taught at the school of Medicine, cultural sensitivity and awareness, international outreach, and potential partnerships between NAAMA MI and OU-WBSOM. This was followed by a private tour of the school guided by the Dean himself. The Dean with his staff went to great lengths to ensure the visit was informative, productive and educational. “I believe creating and nurturing these types of relationships between NAAMA MI and higher academic institutions will benefit both entities in the long run” stated Dr. Fawaz.

NAAMA MI & SAMS MI Joint Symposium

On April 20, NAAMA  and SAMS Michigan chapters held a joint CME symposium on the Obesity Epidemic.  All the presentations were very informative and interesting. Presentations covered updates on prevention, complications and treatment of obesity.  Representatives from various pharmaceutical companies held nice exhibit tables where they presented their products to attendees. The event which took place in the Embassy Suites in Southfield city was successful and offered the 50 attendees a 4 hours of CME credit.

NAAMA MI Resident & Student Mixer

NAAMA News

NAAMA-MI hosted a Dinner Mixer for Residents, Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy students on April  12 at Al-Ameer’s Restaurant in Dearborn Heights. It was a great time for students and residents from all across the State of Michigan to meet each other. Students and Residents were able to share there stories, make new friends and connections that will be beneficial throughout the rest of their careers in the health field. This Mixer was a stepping stone to build a strong Arab Student/Resident network in Michigan.

Miller Canfield Presentation

As a continued offer from NAAMA MI to educate its members , Miller Canfield held a presentation on March 20,2013 at the Holiday Inn  Express in Southfield about Health care Fraud Prosecutions. The presentation  informed  members about recent aggressive health care fraud enforcement efforts by the federal and state governments and about prosecutions of physicians for prescribing controlled substances. Presenters  explained to the doctors what draws the attention of law enforcement officials, how to implement best practices, and how to protect themselves in these areas.  The Presenters were Saul Green , former United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan and Matthew F. Leitman, Attorney and Counselor at Law.
