The newly formed NAAMA RFC (Residents and Fellows Council) of the Michigan chapter, held its first activity on Saturday September 17 th, 2005. The workshop: “Now what: Life after residency” was aimed to provide physicians in training as they approach the crossroads of fellowship or private practice an advice from the experts.
Dr. Federico Mariana “President of the Wayne County Medical Society” delivered the opening statement on behalf of the Michigan State Medical Society on the importance of physicians to be involved in the policy setting and decision making when it comes to organized medicine.
A panel of fellowship program directors including Dr. Basim Dubaybo “Chief of Staff at the John Dingel VA medical Center, and past Director of the Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship training at Wayne State University”, Dr. Henry Kim “Director of Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship training at Henry Ford Hospital”, Dr. Basim Asmar “Director of Pediatrics Infectious Disease Fellowship training at Wayne State University” and Dr. Michael Kleerekoper “Director of Pathology Endocrinology Fellowship training at Wayne State University” answered questions from the attendees on the application process and when goes into the decision making of accepting a candidate for a fellow ship position.
Dr. Manya Arond Thomas “Certified Business Coach and Motivational Catalyst” gave an interactive presentation about the do’s and don’t about the interview process and how an applicant can maximize his or her chances in getting the position they are applying for.
Dr. Diane Levine from Wayne State University gave an insightful look at the ins and outs of the application process and what goes in a resident's or fellow's personal statement, CV and letters of reference.
The finale was Dr. Scott Ransom’s “Director of Program for Leading Healthcare Improvement at the University of Michigan” presentation about the other direction that a young physician might face which is the “Business end of Medicine” and what needs to be considered before a physician signs the contract to join a private practice.
The evening was well attended by NAAMA MI associate members and non members alike from many residency programs throughout Michigan.
