NAAMA MI joins MSMS IMG section

In April 1988, the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) House of Delegates formed the first Section for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in the country.
The goals of the IMG Section include:
To increase the awareness of IMGs in Michigan about organized medicine.
To increase the IMG membership in organized medicine at both the county and the state levels.
To involve IMGs in the activities of Michigans county and state societies.
To increase IMGs involvement in community activities.
        Some Resolution topics have included:
Anti-discrimination measures in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Options available to J-1 Visa holders.
        Electronic Resident Application Service pricing
Nominating IMGs to the ACGME Board
        Updating MSMS policies.
IMGs in Michigan have carved out a niche for themselves within organized medicine. Working together with MSMS bodes well for our future and that of organized medicine in this state.
MSMS and NAAMA Michigan have been developing mutually beneficial ways to recruit  physicians in Michigan. A leadership meeting was held on February 26, 2004, where leaders of both organizations met to discuss current IMG issues as well as issues specific to NAAMA.   A joint newsletter was prepared to encourage membership to both organizations. Our chapter was almost always represented at all IMG council meetings as well as MSMS functions.
