As a leading professional medical organization in the Arab American community, NAAMA- MI is proud again to report on another CME program that was held on May 2, 2012 at Meriwether’s Restaurant in Southfield. The program was a great success and feedback by attendants was rated very high. The speaker was Dr. Dilip Moonka, MD, Medical Director, Liver Transplantation, from Henry Ford Health System, who is well known in this field of hepatology. We had a good attendance, excellent presentation and good food. The program was sponsored by Rush Medical Center and Organized by Simply Speaking.

On Saturday April 28, ACCESS honored two prominent Arab American public servants as 2012 Arab Americans of the Year. Ambassadors Selwa “Lucky” Roosevelt, and Edward M. Gabriel accepted the awards before an audience of nearly 2,000 ACCESS friends and supporters during the ACCESS 41st Anniversary Dinner at the Detroit Marriott. Both awardees talked about how their Arab heritage grounded them in life as they went on achieve great successes. The event also featured scholarship presentations by philanthropist Russell Ebeid and a spotlight on the Teen Grant-making Initiative, a program empowering youth to give back to their fellow youth in the community. NAAMA- MI was one of several sponsors of this great event and was privileged to support ACCESS as an organization helping all people of Arabic heritage in many ways like healthcare, social and economic.

University of Michigan Health Care at The Michigan Islamic Academy

In our continued efforts to support local health services, NAAMA-Michigan Chapter is pleased to report that they recently joined a team of University of Michigan medical students who organized a Health Fair at the Michigan Islamic Academy in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The event took place on Saturday April 14 lead by Reda Jaber and other UM medical students. More than 30 people were screened and counseled for lipid profile and heart disease risk, bold sugar and diabetes, blood pressure and eye disease including Glaucoma and vision. Dr. Saleh, President of NAAMA-MI, participated in this program.

Michigan State Medical Society ( Third Annual International Cultural Evening )

On Friday April 20, 2012, MSMS held the 3rd Annual IMG International Cultural Evening at the Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw, Michigan. NAAMA-Michigan Chapter was recognized for its strong support as a sponsor of this program and was represented by its president Dr. Husain Saleh. Dr. M. Hammami, NAAMA Past President was grateful for chairing the organization of this program. MSMS-IMG Section Chair, Dr. A. C. Brown and MSMS President Elect Dr. John Bizon were among many leaders who attended and thanked the participants. The attendees enjoyed great ethnic food, cultural dances and music.

Objective:

HBV Guidelines Review

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to incorporate the following objectives into their practice of medicine:

* Screen and test for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in my patients at high risk for HBV infection according to the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

* Diagnosis HBV infection using the tests recommended by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).

* Appropriately select anti-HBV therapy in my HBV-infected patients according to the AASLD recommendations.

A very informative and important seminar was held yesterday on Apr. 18. This seminar was presented by Estate Planning Attorney David Mammel and Wealth Management Advisor Marty Schmidt.The Seminar took place at Habib restaurant in Dearborn and was followed by the Board meeting where all the coming activities and events where discussed by board members. The Seminar offered information about how to build financial security and how to prepare estate plans so physicians can protect and provide for their families ,themselves and their practices. We would like to thank all members that had joined us for this seminar and would also like to encourage all members to participate in future events.

Health Screening in Dearborn 3/18/2012

As part of the continued efforts of NAAMA-Michigan Chapter to offer healthcare support to the community, the National Arab American Medical Association teamed up with the Arab American Pharmacist Association of Wayne State University for a Free Health Screening. At the event volunteered medical students under supervision, conducted basic health screening tests to many people at the Islamic Center of America on Ford Rd.
