Directions to North Hickory Shelter H: Exit I-96 at Kensington Road, exit 151. Follow signs into the park, after the tollbooth, go about 1 ¾ miles into the park. Turn right on Island Road, or Park Route #5. Turn left on the first drive on the left. North Hickory is to your left at the top of the hill.

ALL STAR BASKETBALL GAME

On Sunday June 3, NAAMA-MI members and families and members of ASACA (American Syrian Arab Cultural Association) and their families spend part of the afternoon enjoying a basketball game.  This was at Beverly Hills Academy, in Beverly Hills. Men, women and children had lots of fun watching and cheering for the players on both sides. The players had good athletic skills and worked hard to win. At the end, it was NAAMA-MI that won the game with a strong surge and accelerated offensive in the last couple of minutes.  It was just for fun and good social gathering.

 

 

Neisseria Meningitidis Lecture

As continuing medical educational programs to the Michigan medical community, NAAMA-MI hosted Dr. W. AbuHammour during the monthly Board meeting on May 23, 2012. The presentation was on the topic of  Neisseria meningitidis: An important and devastating human pathogen. This took place at Habib Restaurant- Dearborn at 6:00 pm. The audiences were impressed by the presentation and the presenter and important information and updates related to this serious disease were discussed.  This included:

  • New Vaccine is now available
  • Bacteriology and Epidemiology of this disease
  • ACIP recommendations for use of meningococcal vaccines
  • Adolescent vaccination coverage: getting to goal

 

 

 

NAAMA-MI a sponsor for Arab American Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet

On Wednesday May 16, NAAMA-MI was proud to be among other organizations celebrating the achievements of a select group of Arab Americans that was highlighted at the American Arab Professionals Networks’ annual “Celebrating Success” Banquet at Greenfield Manor.

This year selected pioneer professionals of various sectors were chosen from the community. NAAMA immediate past President, Dr. Mohannad Hammami, was selected as Arab American of the Year in Medicine. He discussed the importance of giving back to the community, and spoke about the challenges of being an immigrant. “You are recognizing an immigrant at a time when immigrant is a dirty word…Being an immigrant is something I will wear on my heart with the utmost pride,” Dr. Hammami said.

“For 20 years we have been the voice of Arab American businesses in our community and abroad,” American Arab Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ahmed Chabbani said.

Keynote speaker Michael Robinson, Managing Director and Co-Head of J.P. Morgan Private Bank outlined some of the characteristics successful people hold. They’re also very generous when it comes to giving back to the community. “Successful people tend to give back to the people around them and create lifelong friendships.”

NAAMA MI Sponsored Lebanese American Heritage Club Annual Gala

On Fiday May 11. 2012 NAAMA-MI was proud to be a sponsor of the LAHC 24th Annual Awards Gala at the Hyatt in Dearborn, and to continue this exchange sponsorship as before. This was a great event in which about 51 college students received scholarship for their high achievements and academic excellence. Many officials from the City, County, business companies and various community organizations were represented at the event. Several NAAMA-MI Board members were present at the event.

NAAMA MI Spring Social

On Saturday May 12, 2012, medical and other healthcare students gathered for an evening of social networking at the Gemayze Restaurant in Royal Oak. NAAMA-MI is proud to be the sponsor of that event. Dr. Saleh, NAAMA-MI President and Dr. Nazem Al Hussein, a NAAMA-MI active member, attended the event and mingled with the students who were vastly from WSU. The program was organized by Roula Daher, Eric Succar and Manal Peracha from WSU_School of medicine. Everyone enjoyed the evening with good light food and friendly social gathering.

As a leading professional medical organization in the Arab American community, NAAMA- MI is proud again to report on another CME program that was held on May 2, 2012 at Meriwether’s Restaurant in Southfield. The program was a great success and feedback by attendants was rated very high. The speaker was Dr. Dilip Moonka, MD, Medical Director, Liver Transplantation, from Henry Ford Health System, who is well known in this field of hepatology. We had a good attendance, excellent presentation and good food. The program was sponsored by Rush Medical Center and Organized by Simply Speaking.

On Saturday April 28, ACCESS honored two prominent Arab American public servants as 2012 Arab Americans of the Year. Ambassadors Selwa “Lucky” Roosevelt, and Edward M. Gabriel accepted the awards before an audience of nearly 2,000 ACCESS friends and supporters during the ACCESS 41st Anniversary Dinner at the Detroit Marriott. Both awardees talked about how their Arab heritage grounded them in life as they went on achieve great successes. The event also featured scholarship presentations by philanthropist Russell Ebeid and a spotlight on the Teen Grant-making Initiative, a program empowering youth to give back to their fellow youth in the community. NAAMA- MI was one of several sponsors of this great event and was privileged to support ACCESS as an organization helping all people of Arabic heritage in many ways like healthcare, social and economic.

University of Michigan Health Care at The Michigan Islamic Academy

In our continued efforts to support local health services, NAAMA-Michigan Chapter is pleased to report that they recently joined a team of University of Michigan medical students who organized a Health Fair at the Michigan Islamic Academy in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The event took place on Saturday April 14 lead by Reda Jaber and other UM medical students. More than 30 people were screened and counseled for lipid profile and heart disease risk, bold sugar and diabetes, blood pressure and eye disease including Glaucoma and vision. Dr. Saleh, President of NAAMA-MI, participated in this program.
