In response to the disastrous effects of Hurricane Katrina, the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and the Chapter Presidents along with a number of current and past officers of NAAMA have put together the following plan at an emergency meeting during our 27th National Convention held in Santa Monica last weekend:

1-Medical relief efforts:
We have established our sizable chapter in Houston as the anchor for the operation as many of the evacuees have moved to its neighborhood. The chapter leaders and members have already been volunteering their efforts and resources, and take shifts in the massive operation at the Astrodome.
Members of our Southern Chapter in Louisiana have also been contributing their time and skills in Alexandria and other cities.

In addition, we have been in contact with individual members in the states of Mississippi and Alabama where NAAMA does not have chapters.

2-Financially:
NAAMA committed an urgent sum of $ 50,000 as an immediate contribution to the relief effort. A good share of this money has already been collected through individual contributions  by members of the above mentioned group and many of our generous members attending the meeting along with commitment of some of our chapters.

3-Galvanizing the efforts of other organizations:
NAAMA has started the coordination of volunteer efforts of Arab American
and other community organizations in Detroit, Houston and LA.

As the needs will continue to mount in the following weeks and months, we
urge all our members to contribute to NAAMA Relief Fund for Hurricane
Katrina.
